A: Each user that connects to iPOS requires a database CAL (client access
license) for the relevant underlying database technology (Microsoft SQL/Server
or Oracle). There is some discussion about middleware applications such as
web servers which effectively distribute single connections from a device
across several users. Database vendor's current policies are to ignore the
middle tier and still charge for each client/user accessing the server. Thus
buying CPU based licenses allowing unlimited users can be cheaper if you have
a lot of clients accessing the same server.
This is explained for Microsoft SQL/Server here: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/default.asp
A: iPOS 5.4 is developed for Microsoft .NET. The value that Microsoft brings is the low overall cost of the platform, ease of management and the breadth and level of integration of the platform. We believe .NET to be a commercially sensible, supportable, low-cost, agile platform from a world-wide recognised technology leader.
