Your business processes are the activities and tasks performed within the organisation that form the glue between your people and your management systems. Every transaction created in your financial or line of business application will be generated by some form of workflow or activity linked to your business.
Business Process Management (also known to some as BPM) is the simplification and standardisation of process automation and the incorporation of the result within a technological framework that delivers workflow controls and inter-application transaction management. BPM is not just applicable for the large "transformation" project in your business; it is equally relevant to the small, isolated, day-to-day processes that keep your business running, such as adding a new debtor or creditor. Likewise it also can be used to overcome specific process pains and assist with process management.
These business processes can be broken down into two basic groups, infrastructure and core.
1) Infrastructure processes cover the generic areas of your business that are replicated by or similar to those in all companies in your industry and quite possible all companies in general. Your HR process for example - leave application, expenses claims, payroll management etc. The systems you use may be different to your competitors however the purpose of the process and their outcomes are the same.
2) Core processes on the other hand are the elements of your business that are unique to you and are critical to the nature and operation of your business - they may well differentiate you in the marketplace and add to your competitive advantage.
BPM achieves a number of benefits for your business including:
The definition and consistent application of your business rules
The distribution of relevant processes to the applicable staff members.
The creation of a process compliance culture.
The visibility and transparency of your data structure and process patterns.
Improved auditability of your business operations.
The greatest immediate benefits are of course an increased competitive advantage and a reduction in operational costs through the introduction of efficiency and the reduction of time lag.
